Lower Your Stress Level: Lessons From Baboons

In a National Geographic video documentary, “Stress: Portrait of a Killer,” Stanford University neurobiologist Dr. Robert Sapolsky shows us the effect of stress on our bodies. The stress response is critical to our survival, as for example when we run away from a physical danger. What is interesting is that we turn on the exact same stress response for purely psychological states: thinking about our job, the taxes we have to pay, or a 30-year mortgage. “The key difference,” says Dr. Sapolski, “is we are not doing it for a real physiological reason and we are doing it non-stop.” So by not turning off the stress response for “life’s traffic jams,” we secrete the same corrosive hormones, and after a while, the stress response is more damaging than the stress itself. Chronic stress undermines our immune system, clogs our arteries, restricts blood flow and kills brain cells which affects learning and memory. If you have ever doubted the effects of stress on your body, this documentary will dispel them. In studying wild baboons for the past 30 years, Dr. Sapolsky reports that these primates organize themselves into distinct social hierarchies and subject one another to social stress. The stress increases blood pressure, damaging artery walls in low-ranking baboons. The research also discovered that the same applies to humans. Our standing in the social hierarchy can produce high stress hormones—subordinates, for example, are more subject to the harmful effects of stress. “Feeling” low-ranking is also detrimental to our health. This is tied primarily to a lack of control and predictability the lower we are in the corporate food chain. New findings also show that stress shortens the genetic structures, called telomeres, which protect the ends of our chromosomes from fraying. The shortening of the telomeres accelerates the aging process in low ranking baboons, and the same happens in humans who are chronically stressed. While we cannot eliminate stress from our lives, there is a lot we can do to minimize its effects. Here are some tips to help you:

Environment Canada said the temperature reached 35 C around 3 p.m., breaking the previous July 17 record of 34.4 C set in 2002. The agency issued a humidex advisory with values pushing the 40-degree mark.

App developer Michael Lee Johnson, conscious of the need to be big on Google+ or be nobody, wondered what the best way to levitate his Google+ circles might be. He hit upon a fine idea: he placed an ad on Facebook. It was a simple thing that was headlined: "Add Michael to Google+."

The copy read: "If you're lucky enough to have a Google+ account, add Michael Lee Johnson, Internet Geek, App Developer, Technological Virtuoso."

If those words weren't enough to persuade Facebook users that Johnson was a must for their Google+, he added a fine picture of himself wearing a jaunty cap.

You're not guessing what happened with the ad, are you? You know what happened, don't you? Facebook didn't, according to Johnson, merely erase this heinous horse of Troy from its pages. It reportedly banned all his other campaigns too.

Canadians will soon be carrying a lot more plastic around in their wallets, but rather than following the lead of their overcharging brethren to the south, the government is switching to plastic cash, furthering the effort to thwart counterfeiters.

The polymer bills will last more than twice as long as the paper-cotton variety, and contain features such as transparent text, hidden numbers, holographic likenesses and raised ink among others. This step forward in currency will appropriately enough also celebrate the accomplishments of Canadian science on the new bills as well.

Did you feel it? Well, you probably didn't, unless you're attending a sun worshiping party (in which case it was probably the beat of bongos and strong cider you felt rather than any spacetime warping), but you just lived through a beautifully subtle celestial event: the summer solstice.

The summer solstice for the Northern Hemisphere is the exact moment when the axial tilt of the Earth is at its most inclined toward the sun during its 365 day orbit -- at an angle of 23° 26'. That doesn't happen at midday, it doesn't happen at midnight, it happens at the exact same time for every country on the planet.

Let’s look at the 3 P’s: Passion, Perseverance, and Persistence.

Basically, you have to love what you are doing or won’t be successful at it. If you don’t love it, you’ll quit, so you need to keep working on your goals even when times are SUPER HARD and looking dismal. You need to be persistent. If you are persistent, you will inevitably PERSEVERE. Which is the goal.

2. Great entrepreneurs have Empathy for fellow man. They understand the struggles of up and coming entrepreneurs, and they are usually willing to help others accomplish their goals through mentoring. I love this aspect of Network Marketing by the way… makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

3. Another good entrepreneur trait is a sense of fairness. Often times, entrepreneurs believe in Karma in one form or another (what goes around comes around, etc), and just like they don’t want to be screwed over, they tend to avoid screwing over others.

4. Integrity. Gotta have it, and good entrepreneurs do. This goes along with number 3, and is one of the most important, if not the most important entrepreneur trait in the list.

5. Successful entrepreneurs are hard working. The good ones work SMART too, utilizing leverage to maximize their efforts. The more work they put into it, the more it multiplies exponentially with leverage.

6. Willingness to Learn. Good entrepreneurs never stop learning. This entrepreneur trait is vital to your success. They also concede to others who know more about a subject than they do, and learn from it. Make mistakes and learn from those too!

7. Entrepreneur Trait 7 is being a good Listener. You can’t learn anything if you are talking, bottom line. By listening, you help others to open up and this helps you to be a better coach.

8. Vision. Wow…I can’t say enough about this. Visualizing your end goal is 100% Necessary to your success. No success without visualizing your goals and dreams. Write them down, and read them daily.

9. Personal Development. An entrepreneur traits list would not be complete without personal development. Odds are, you weren’t born perfect. There are literally thousands of books out there on Personal Development, and I suggest you start reading.
